The inclusion of fibers into paving and overlays reduces crack propagation since the fiber reinforcement is uniformly distributed. The stresses which would cause cracking to occur are redistributed and crack widths are minimized, increasing the toughness and durability of the concrete. When incorporated into the design, synthetic macrofibers can either increase the fatigue life of paving applications or maybe reduce the thickness required.

Ultra-thin whitetopping consists of bonding 2”- 4” of fiber reinforced concrete to a worn asphalt surface. The composite action between the thin concrete overlay and the underlying surface reduces the stress and allows for a thinner overlay when compared to an unbonded overlay.
